Ceramic Techniques
Instructor: Marsha VanVlack
8 weeks of instruction over 10 weeks
Wednesdays 6:00-8:00
Activating both sides of the studio, Marsha will walk students through adding, hand-built attachments to wheel-thrown forms! This session will cover a plethora of techniques and showcase ways to add a little more pizazz to functional wares.
Students enrolled in the class will be encouraged to alter the pots they make with hand-built components such as slabs and coils. These additions can serve as layered texture and provide different functions for the pots being made throughout the course. Want to learn how to make a handle, spout or add textured decoration? Fire a wood kiln with Bill Moon! Open to all ceramic artists, functional and sculptural. The class will make and bisque at the Wellsville Creative Arts Center. Glazing and the final wood firing will be in Bill’s catenary arch wood kiln. How to make work that
is conducive to that wood fired magic will be discussed and demonstrated during class. Learn about slips, wadding, and special wood-firing glazes such as shinos.
To maximize student’s time to create a body of work the class will be conducted the season before the firing i.e. – Winter Class / Spring Firing, Spring Class / Summer Firing, Summer Class / Fall Firing, etc. Students who enroll will need to make the firing dates a priority, as everyone will be assigned a shift to help fire the kiln. Being a collaborative and community based experience, wood firing is special in that it brings everyone closer together through hard work and conversation around one
common goal – to start a fire.

Ceramic Wheel Throwing
Instructor: Kimberly Grossman
8 weeks of instruction over 10 weeks
Wednesdays 2:00 - 4:00
All skill levels are welcome to join this class! Beginning with functional wares such as cups, bowls, and vases, Kimberly will walk students through the process of throwing on the potter's wheel. Students will gain confidence and hone their skills through each step of the making process as the instructor guides students through both assignments and self-directed projects.
Kimberly has prepared more advanced projects for returning students -- teaching about surface decoration and how repetition can enhance the cohesiveness of different forms.
Ceramic Sculpture
Instructor: Mark Corwine
8 weeks of instruction over 10 weeks
Wednesdays 6:00-8:00
Students of all levels are welcome to join this class. Beginner students will learn to construct sculptural forms, and functional if they wish, with traditional handbuilding techniques. Experienced students will continue to develop their own skills and processes with assistance from the instructor.
In Mark’s own work, he utilizes metaphor as inspiration for conceptual meaning. With this in mind, he is able to speak a message to the viewer, and portray a sense of drama. Slips and glazes contrast with the red clay he uses thus increasing the variety in the color palette and help to emphasize different elements of the sculpture.
